The honest part

Where the premium brands win — and we won't pretend otherwise

Two different business models. Most of the real differences follow from that, not from the beam. The question a fabricator is actually answering: over the next decade, which arrangement costs less to own and run in my building?

Build quality

Mechanical engineering, frames, enclosures and beam delivery on the premium tier are excellent. This is not a page that tells you they build a poor machine — and you should be skeptical of any page that does.

Process reliability at high duty cycles

Lights-out, three shifts a day, automated load and unload, a process window you cannot afford to drift. That track record over very long run hours is a genuine, paid-for advantage.

Resale value

Widely regarded as holding value on the used market better than almost anything else in the category. If your capital plan assumes a resale at year five or seven, that residual is a real line item.

Four line items decide this, and only one of them is on the spec sheet.

The price of entry

The premium tier costs what it costs. Vantix positions at roughly 60 percent of it, and every system arrives new, warrantied and financed — installation, commissioning, 5-day on-site training, a 2-year warranty and a 1-year spare parts kit included rather than quoted as extras. Where capital is the binding constraint, that difference is the difference between buying a 12 kW machine and a 20 kW machine.

The distance to a service engineer

This is the axis where geography, not engineering, decides the outcome. A premium European OEM concentrates its deepest technical resources in Europe — which is also why a difficult fault in Kamloops, Grande Prairie or Prince George becomes a scheduling problem rather than a repair. Multiply your hourly contribution margin by the hours you lose per incident, then by the incidents you expect over ten years.

Where the parts actually sit

A machine is only as available as its slowest replacement part. Vantix stocks critical spares in Lumby, BC and ships them to Western Canadian customers in days. Whichever brand you evaluate, do not accept a general statement about a global parts network — ask for the specific list of parts held in Canada for your model, the shipping lane and the customs handling.

Lead time, installation and commissioning

Schedules vary by model, configuration and order book, so treat any date either vendor gives you as a commitment to be written into the purchase agreement, not a brochure claim. What Vantix puts in writing is that installation, commissioning and 5-day on-site training are included rather than subcontracted.

Vantix prints its component list on the spec sheet. You can price a replacement yourself, and the vendor expects you to check. Every one of these design decisions is a line item on a quote.

Both answers are legitimate. Here is which one is yours.

The same machine is the right call for one shop and the wrong call for another. It comes down to where the cost actually lands in your building.

Choose

Vantix

Vantix is the stronger choice when the cost of downtime, capital efficiency and service proximity decide the purchase.

  • You are in Western Canada and a stopped line is expensive. A 48-hour on-site commitment, a 24/7 Canadian hotline and spares stocked in Lumby, BC are included with every system, not sold as a 4,500 to 14,000 USD per year agreement.
  • Capital is the binding constraint. Vantix's own brochure puts its pricing at roughly 60 percent of a premium European brand's, which can be the difference between the 12 kW machine and the 20 kW machine, or the cutter and the tube machine you also need.
  • You want everything in the price. 2-year warranty, 5-day on-site training, 1-year spare parts kit, installation and commissioning are included rather than quoted later.
  • You want published numbers before the sales call. Power range, ± 0.03 mm accuracy, speed, bed sizes, thickness by material and named components are on the public spec sheet; TRUMPF's current pages do not publish an accuracy figure at all.
  • You also need handheld laser welding. TRUMPF's North American lineup has none; the Vantix HLW ladder starts at $32,000 CAD.
  • You want to see it cut your material first. The Lumby, BC showroom runs customer parts before purchase.
Choose

TRUMPF

TRUMPF is genuinely the better buy in several situations, and pretending otherwise would not help you.

  • You are automating toward lights-out production. The LoadMaster, LiftMaster, SortMaster and TruStore ladder up to the TruLaser Center 7030 is a real, integrated automation path Vantix does not publish an equivalent for.
  • You are running very high duty cycles and cannot tolerate process drift. Three-shift production on a 280 m/min Series 5000 platform is exactly what the premium buys.
  • Your capital plan depends on residual value. TRUMPF machines hold strong value on the used market; if you will trade at year five or seven, that residual can close a large part of the price gap.
  • You want single-vendor accountability down to the beam source. TRUMPF builds its own TruDisk and TruFiber lasers; Vantix does not name its source vendor on the spec sheet.
  • You want manufacturer-direct financing structures. TRUMPF Bank's leases and pay-per-use options, on terms to 60 months, are something a dealer cannot replicate.
  • You already run TRUMPF, or a customer or contract specifies it. Trained operators, existing programs, a fitted spares shelf, or a purchase order that names the brand settle the comparison before it starts.
  • Your tube work needs in-process tapping and flow drilling. The TruLaser Tube 5000 and 7000 do secondary operations in-cycle that the Vantix TPC does not publish.
The full analysis

The long version

Everything above, argued out in full — for the reader who wants the detail before committing capital.

Two different businesses, not two versions of the same one. TRUMPF is a German original equipment manufacturer that designs and builds its own machines and beam sources, sells through its own subsidiaries, and sits at the top of the fiber laser market on price and reputation. Vantix Industrial Laser Systems is a Canadian company in Lumby, British Columbia that supplies fiber laser cutting, tube and profile cutting, structural profile cutting, handheld laser welding and laser cleaning systems, and installs, commissions, trains and services them from that BC base.

This page does not argue that Vantix out-engineers TRUMPF. It puts both companies' published numbers side by side, concedes what TRUMPF genuinely does better, and then shows you the arithmetic that TRUMPF's own service documents ask a Canadian buyer to do.

Where TRUMPF wins, and we are not going to argue about it

Positioning speed and capability at the top end. TRUMPF's Series 5000 machines position at 280 m/min, double the 140 m/min Vantix publishes, and its 24 kW TruDisk and TruFiber sources cut 40 mm mild steel as standard and up to 60 mm with the thick-sheet package (TRUMPF product pages and Series 5000 datasheet [S3, S5, S1]). If you are running lights-out, three shifts, with a process window you cannot afford to drift, that top-end capability and TRUMPF's reputation over long run hours are part of what the premium buys.

The automation ladder. LoadMaster, LiftMaster, SortMaster, TruStore storage towers, up to the fully automated TruLaser Center 7030 that cuts, sorts and connects to storage for lights-out production (TRUMPF 2D laser brochure [S8]). Vantix publishes semi-automatic tube loading and does not publish a comparable sheet-side automation ladder. If your plan is an automated factory rather than a machine, TRUMPF has more to sell you.

Software. Oseon production and material-flow software, TruTops Boost programming, MobileControl, Drop&Cut camera nesting (TRUMPF product page and 2D laser brochure [S1, S8]). A mature, integrated ecosystem.

In-house beam sources. TRUMPF builds its own TruDisk and TruFiber lasers, which means single-vendor accountability for the machine and the source [S1, S3]. Vantix's spec sheet names its motion and structure components, YASKAWA servos and Airtac guides among them, but does not name its source vendor.

Financing muscle. TRUMPF Bank offers finance leases, operating leases and pay-per-use structures on terms to 60 months, independent of your bank [S14]. Vantix arranges financing during quoting; it does not own a bank.

Resale value. TRUMPF machines demonstrably hold strong value on the used market, and TRUMPF itself markets higher resale value for machines under its service agreements [S12]. Vantix is a newer Canadian brand with a thinner secondary market. If your capital plan assumes a trade or sale at year five or seven, that residual is a real line item and it favours TRUMPF.

Tube pedigree. The TruLaser Tube 7000 handles 273 mm OD round tube with in-process tapping and flow drilling [S6], operations the Vantix TPC does not publish. The TPC answers with a larger published envelope, 48 ft lengths and Ø 40 in round capacity, and published 2-, 3- and 4-chuck configurations, so which machine wins depends entirely on your tube mix.

What the spec sheets say, and what they do not

On paper, the published ceilings are not where most buyers expect them. Vantix publishes a 3 to 60 kW range with maximum thickness at 60 kW of 5 in (127 mm) steel, 3.5 in (89 mm) stainless and 2.5 in (64 mm) aluminum. TRUMPF's current flatbed lineup tops out at 24 kW, cutting 40 mm standard and up to 60 mm steel with the thick-sheet package [S1, S3]. TRUMPF's numbers carry decades of field validation behind them; Vantix's are its own published commitments, and the way to test either is the same: bring your material and watch it cut.

One asymmetry is worth naming directly. Vantix publishes ± 0.03 mm positioning accuracy on its spec sheet. TRUMPF's current TruLaser product pages and the Series 5000 datasheet publish no positioning accuracy or repeatability figure at all [S1, S2, S3]. The figures you see quoted for TruLaser accuracy around the web come from third-party used-machine listings, not from TRUMPF. If that number matters to your parts, ask TRUMPF for it in writing for the exact model you are quoting, because their public documents will not give it to you.

The service contract you will actually sign

This is the section TRUMPF's own documents wrote. Every claim here is from TRUMPF's published service and sales terms, retrieved 14 August 2026, and every price is in US dollars because that is how TRUMPF publishes them.

The standard TRUMPF equipment warranty is one year from installation completion (TRUMPF terms and conditions of sale [S10]). TRUMPF's own published sample quotation prices a warranty extension with one preventive maintenance visit at 14,000 USD, on a TruBend 2100 press brake, the only product TRUMPF publishes a real price for [S11]. Every Vantix system includes a 2-year warranty.

TRUMPF's 48-hour on-site guarantee is real, and it is sold, not included: "For any a STANDARD, PREMIUM or PREMIUM PLUS Agreement, we guarantee to be onsite of a down TruLaser, TruPunch or TruBend within 48 hours of that mission being created" (TRUMPF service agreements brochure [S12]). The same sample quotation prices service agreement tiers at 4,500, 11,500 and 14,000 USD per year [S11]. Without an agreement, TRUMPF publishes no response-time commitment at all; standard service is scheduled on receipt of a purchase order [S13]. Vantix includes 48-hour on-site response in Western Canada with every system.

Phone support follows the same pattern. TRUMPF's service department answers Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM Eastern [S13]. For a shop in BC, that is 4 AM to 2 PM Pacific, and your 3 PM breakdown waits for tomorrow unless you have purchased the Service Package that extends support to 24/7 [S13]. Vantix operates a 24/7 Canadian hotline, included; in its own words, engineers who answer the phone at 2 a.m. when your line stops.

And read the travel clause: "Spare Parts Shipping and Service Technician hourly travel time and living expenses are billable to the Customer, if applicable, for all warranty service work" [S13]. Even under warranty, the technician's journey to your door can be your cost. TRUMPF's one listed Canadian location is Oakville, Ontario [S9], roughly 4,000 km from a BC shop, so the journey is not short. Vantix's on-site commitment in Western Canada is included, and its parts are stocked in Lumby, BC, 1 to 3 days out (Vantix brochure).

One genuine TRUMPF service positive belongs here too: TRUMPF currently offers 5 years of free service parts for the TruFiber laser source on new 2D machines, in conjunction with a service agreement [S8]. Note the condition; the parts promotion rides on the paid agreement.

The five-year columns

We are not going to invent a total cost of ownership number for TRUMPF; nobody outside a real quotation can. What we can give you is the columns, each one sourced, so you can add them yourself against your own quotes:

  • Purchase price. TRUMPF publishes no laser prices; every product page ends in "REQUEST OFFER" [S1, S6, S7]. Vantix's own brochure puts its pricing at roughly 60 percent of a premium European brand's, and Vantix publishes CAD pricing where it can, such as the handheld welder ladder at $32,000, $42,000 and $52,000.
  • Warranty years included. Two (Vantix) versus one (TRUMPF [S10]), with the TRUMPF extension priced in its own sample at 14,000 USD [S11].
  • Service agreement, per year, times five. Included commitments (Vantix) versus 4,500 to 14,000 USD per year for the tiers that carry TRUMPF's 48-hour guarantee [S11, S12].
  • Travel and living expenses per incident. Included in Western Canada (Vantix) versus billable, even for warranty work [S13].
  • Training and first-year spares. 5-day on-site training and a 1-year spare parts kit included (Vantix); for TRUMPF, not published in the sources reviewed, so confirm what your quotation includes.
  • Residual value at trade. Advantage TRUMPF, and honestly so; see the concessions above.

Run those columns against your own downtime cost per hour. That arithmetic, not the beam, is where this comparison is decided.

If you need welding too

Compare on the things that actually differ in your situation rather than on brand reputation. Four questions do most of the work: does the configuration genuinely fit your part mix, how far do service and spare parts have to travel to reach you, what happens to your schedule during an unplanned stop, and what is the cost over the life of the machine rather than at purchase.
