The fastest way to stall a purchase is to ask a machine to hold a certification that belongs to your shop, your welder, or your building. Canadian practice splits four ways.
The machine
Laser products sold, leased, imported or serviced in Canada fall under Health Canada's Radiation Emitting Devices Regulations, amended in 2024 to align with IEC 60825-1:2014 for classification, engineering features, labelling and user information, in force October 9, 2025.
The shop
CSA W47.1 certification for fusion welding of steel belongs to the fabrication company, administered by the CWB Group: qualified welding supervisors or engineers, approved procedures, and tested welders. Buying any machine neither grants it nor requires it; your contracts do.
The welder
The CWB welder qualification is the only nationally recognized welding credential in Canada, held by the individual, per process and position, valid two years and tied to employment at a certified or applicant company. For pressure work in Alberta, ABSA qualifies pressure welders under its own regulation.
The workplace
Class 3B and Class 4 laser duties sit with the employer under provincial OHS regimes: training, a competent supervisor, and controls, with ANSI Z136.1 cited as guidance in Ontario and referenced by WorkSafeBC's regulation for laser installation and operation in BC.
Pressure-equipment vocabulary follows the same logic: CRNs are issued for boiler, pressure vessel and fitting designs under CSA B51, and Alberta issues PP numbers for pressure piping design registrations. A cutting or welding machine never holds a CRN; the designs it helps you build might. And in food-plant work, CFIA does not approve equipment at all: the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations put outcome-based duties on the food business, while NSF and 3-A standards certify equipment designs and materials.
