The challenge

The Kamloops Heritage Railway Society set out to restore their historic 2141 steam locomotive, the Spirit of Kamloops.

Heritage restoration carries a failure mode that ordinary industrial surface prep does not. The substrate is irreplaceable. If the cleaning method damages it, there is nothing to fall back on.

Every conventional option carries that risk. Vantix is blunt about the trade in its own laser cleaning spec sheet: sandblasting and chemical stripping "create hazardous waste, operator exposure, and downtime." Abrasive media can damage delicate surfaces, and grinding or wire brushing removes exactly the material a restoration exists to preserve.

Vantix records the Society's position as follows: traditional methods risked damaging irreplaceable heritage details, and chemical stripping was slow and created disposal challenges.

The solution

Laser cleaning is selective, and selectivity is the whole reason it suits heritage work. Vantix's laser cleaning spec sheet describes the process as removing rust, paint, coatings, oxide and contaminants "selectively, on the substrate you want to keep."

Vantix explains the mechanism on its laser cleaning page: the laser energy is absorbed by the contamination but reflected by the clean metal underneath, so when the surface is clean the process naturally stops. That self-limiting behaviour is what separates a laser from a blast nozzle, which keeps removing material for as long as the operator holds it in place.

Why the pulsed platform rather than the continuous one

Vantix sells two laser cleaning platforms on the same control architecture, and its published guidance on which to pick is direct. Choose continuous for high-throughput industrial refurbishment. Choose pulsed for precision work, heritage restoration and mould cleaning.

The pulsed platform is also the one Vantix lists as handling heritage substrates beyond bare metal. Its published pulsed substrate list covers cast iron, stone, concrete and wood, on top of the steel, stainless, aluminum, bronze and titanium supported across both platforms.

Two published pulsed controls matter on delicate work. Eight selectable cleaning patterns let the operator match the scan to the contamination instead of the other way round. A dual red-light preview projects the scan area before the laser fires, so the operator sees the footprint on the part before any energy reaches it.

Both platforms ship with the same Vantix service position: a 2-year warranty, spares stocked in BC, a 24/7 Canadian hotline, and a 48-hour on-site service commitment across Western Canada. In Vantix's own words, parts are "stocked in Lumby, not overseas."

The results

The Society's account of the result appears in Vantix's printed laser cleaning spec sheet and in its trifold brochure:

"Saved a couple of weeks of work — completed in just three hours — on the Spirit of Kamloops restoration using Vantix laser cleaning. The precision was exactly what a heritage project demands."

This is a customer statement, not a Vantix measurement. Vantix did not instrument the job. The three hours and the couple of weeks saved are the Society's own account of its restoration schedule, and we publish them as reported and attributed, exactly as they appear in Vantix's print material. No independent verification of either figure exists.

Why this is the hardest proof of a cleaning process

Most surface prep case studies measure throughput. Heritage restoration measures restraint. A locomotive that has already survived decades cannot be re-made if the cleaning step goes too far, so the question is not how fast a system strips a coating but whether it stops when the coating is gone. That is the claim the Spirit of Kamloops project tests, and it is the reason Vantix lists heritage restoration on the pulsed platform rather than the continuous one.
